West Essex Middle School Students Get Creative On Makerspace Mondays

A new program at the Middle School library in North Caldwell gives students a hands-on outlet for creative and alternative learning.

West Essex Middle School students have a whole new outlet for hands on, creative learning. Science Teacher Jean Marie Zuhl and Librarian Catherine Spinella have teamed up to organize Makerspace Monday, a very special lunch study in the West Essex Middle School library.

This new creative workshop will give students a space to problem solve, experiment and have fun. The lunch study will take place once a month and provide an opportunity for students for hands-on creativity, design and experimentation through a variety of fun activities.

In the first Makerspace Monday lunch study, students created masterpieces out of KNEX and Legos, used blocks to create an earthquake-resistant structure which they tested out on an earthquake table, built a boat to transport pennies and used their engineering skills to create a design using marshmallows.

WEMS student, Cristian Cataldo, said he signed up for the lunch study because he “loves building things.”
