1 Seriously Injured When Car Hits Pedestrian In Chatham: Cops

Victim allegedly reversed course when driver was making turn, police said.

CHATHAM, N.J. – A Chatham Township man driving in the borough struck and seriously injured a woman walking on Fairmount Avenue, police said.

Police responded to the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and Main Street on a report of a pedestrian struck by a car on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 3:40 p.m., Kevin O’Shea said.

An investigation revealed Brian Foerster, 42, of Chatham Township was turning left on to Fairmount Avenue from Main Street when he struck a woman from Warren, age 55, O’Shea said.

Foerster told police the woman was crossing Fairmount Avenue in the crosswalk heading east when she suddenly turned and started walking back the other way, O’Shea said. That’s when Foerster accidentally struck her.

Police said the same account was confirmed by an independent witness.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to Morristown Medical Center by the Chatham Emergency Squad.

Foerster was issued a summons for failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The woman’s current status is not known.
