2 Days Off Added To Chatham Schools Calendar Thanks To Mild Winter

Expect a very long May weekend for students and staff.

CHATHAM, N.J. – Chatham students and faculty have weathered the (mild) winter of 2015-16, now they’ll reap the rewards.

The school calendar had five inclement weather days built in this year, but thanks to a lackluster winter season, only two were used, leaving three extra school days.

Under an agreement with the Chatham teacher’s association, two of those days are taken off the calendar prior to the Memorial Day weekend, which means Chatham schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, May 26 and 27.

So what about that third inclement weather day that wasn’t used? Where does that come off the calendar?

According to Superintendent Michael LaSusa, it won’t.

“The law is that you must have a minimum of 180 days of school,” he said. “But you are permitted to have more. So this year we will end up with 181 days of school.”

LaSusa said if no snow days were used, the district would have ended with 183 days of school after the teacher’s association agreement was fulfilled.

Chatham schools will be off for Good Friday on March 25 and closed for Spring Break from April 11 to April 15.
