Chatham Girl Scout Presents a Senior's Senior Prom

For her Gold project, Diana Singh decided to reach out to the senior citizen community.

Senior residents of the Chathams can dust off their formal wear in anticipation of the senior's Senior Prom Sunday.

Chatham High School junior Diana Singh spent the last two months organizing the "senior prom" for older residents, with volunteers and donations collected from throughout the Chathams.

Chatham businesses and Elegant Taste will both provide refreshments, Singh said. Other donors include Martha Watson Flower Design, and Stop & Shop in Madison.  is helping to manage the RSVPs and transportation to the event.

The prom will take place at Chatham High on Sunday, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. There is no price for admission, Singh said, "which I thought would be a good way to give back to [the seniors]."

Another Girl Scout working on a Gold Award has also arranged for music, Singh said. "Her project is about teens coming together to play music, and the "Senior Prom" event is one of their gigs," she said.

Singh hopes her senior prom will "raise awareness for senior citizens, because I feel like often times they are ignored in our community, and they don't have many events geard towards them.

She organized the event as her project to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, which is "a project that you're doing yourself, as opposed to doing it with a troop," Singh said.

The purpose of the Gold Award is "to give back to a community, and raise awareness about a specific cause," she said.

To make the event happen, Singh said she is working with a team of about five people, including Micki Chaput at the Senior Center.

Singh tracks her progress with the senior prom in her Gold Award binder, a three-ring loose-leaf binder containing everything she needs to submit for the Gold Award. She uses it to keep organized as her project moves nearer completion. "It's something I'd definitely recommend to other Girl Scouts," she said.

Local residents who wish to attend the senior prom can RSVP by Friday by emailing or contacting the at srcenterchatham@comcast.net or at their location in the . Senior citizens are welcome to bring their family members of all ages.

Anyone requiring transportation can contact Chaput at (973) 635-4565.
