Data shows crime is incredibly low in Chatham Township.

CHATHAM TWP., N.J. – Coming off a year when the local police department received full accreditation from the New Jersey Chiefs of Police Association, it’s no wonder Chatham Township was named among the safest towns in New Jersey.
A report released this week by creditdonkey.com, which analyzed the Uniform Crime Report data for 2014 (the last full year statistics were available) for the 50 safest towns in the Garden State put Chatham Township at number four.

- Property crime per 1,000 residents
- Burglary per 1,000 residents
The website then formulated a scoring method combining the categories. The lower the score, the higher the ranking. Chatham Township’s score was 1.239, and was joined by Washington Township (number one overall) as the only Morris County towns to make the top 10. Overall, eight Morris County towns made the top-50, but only towns with populations over 10,000 residents were analyzed.
The website also explained that not all towns submit the crime data to the FBI, which is self-reported by each municipality.
