Chatham Volunteer Of The Year, WWII Vet Dies At 89

CHATHAM, N.J. – Otmar Schreiber gave of himself to his town, his country, and all those around him.

The Chatham resident of 57 years died after a brief illness on March 1, his family said.

Schreiber served in the Navy as one of the world’s first radar operators during World War II, and in 1949 graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from NCE, now known as NJIT. Professionally, he worked for many years in radio interference control, then as a marketing consultant for C.H. Kline.

Using his knowledge and hobby, Schreiber served as Emergency Communications/Civil Defense Amateur Radio coordinator for Chatham, and in 2008 was named the borough’s Volunteer Of The Year.

Schreiber is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held at Chatham United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be directed to the church.
