Fire Strikes Popular Chatham Twp. Store: Cops
Fairmount Country Store's owner knocked down the blaze before it spread, police said.

CHATHAM TWP., N.J. – One of Chatham Township’s most popular locations fell victim to a fire Tuesday morning, police said.
At 7:51 a.m. Chatham Township police and fire department, along with Chatham Borough and Green Village fire departments responded to The Fairmount Country Store on Fairmount Avenue for a report of a fire, Lt. Thomas Miller said.
When units arrived they found the owner who said upon arrival to the shop the space was filled with smoke, Miller said. The store owner was able to extinguish the fire on his own prior to the arrival of responding fire units and police.

Police evacuated the occupants on the second floor of the building as well. The fire appears to have been due to an electrical malfunction, Miller said.
The building has been deemed safe as the fire was contained to a small area and no occupied units were damaged, Miller said.

The store was bought and renovated in 2013 and now serves as a deli and diner. See more about its history here.
