Honor Chatham's 9/11 Victims 20 Years After The Attacks

CHATHAM, NJ — To mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Chatham Borough and Township will host a three-part memorial ceremony on Sept. 11.

The ceremony will begin on Sept. 11 at 6:55 p.m. at the Chatham Train Station's memorial sight along the eastbound parking lot, which consists of a plaque and a tree. The memorial honors those who took the train to work on Sept. 11, 2001 and never returned to Chatham, the Chatham 9/11 Memorial Foundation said in a statement.

The Essex County Pipe and Drum Corp will lead a procession across Fairmount Avenue to the second memorial site at Reasoner Park, where at 7:15 p.m. a westbound NJ Transit train will sound its horn in tribute, according to the Foundation.

Immediately after that, Taps will be played in dedication to the police, fire and EMS first responders who answered the call on Sept. 11, 2001 and never returned.

A ceremony honoring the memories of the 13 people from Chatham who perished will begin just before 7:30 p.m. behind the library, the Foundation said.

The procession will continue along South Passaic Avenue crossing Main Street to arrive at the library, and community members who want to attend the ceremony should arrive by 7:15 p.m.

Guest speakers, along with the Chatham fire, police and emergency squad members, will welcome participants and recite the names of the borough and township residents who lost their lives 20 years ago.
