'This Is Preventable': Chatham Twp PD Share Car Theft Safety Tips

"Many times, becoming a victim of a crime like this is preventable." Here's what you can do to stay safe.

CHATHAM TOWNSHIP, NJ — Despite several warnings over the past few months, car thefts and burglaries have continued in the Morris County area, including in Chatham Township. Police are sharing safety tips for residents, so they can avoid becoming a victim.

The biggest tip? Lock your car.

"Many times, becoming a victim of a crime like this is preventable. Criminals look for crimes of opportunity, and an unlocked vehicle is an easy opportunity," township police said. "An unlocked vehicle with a key or key fob left inside is a windfall for the criminal and a tragedy for the owner."

Residents should take the time to make sure there are no spare keys or key fobs inside the car, and to always lock the car, even if its just parked in your driveway.
