Cinnaminson Police Roll Out 'Click It or Ticket' Program

From May 20 through June 2, you'll want to make sure you're buckled up if you're driving through Cinnaminson or Delran.

That's good advice every day of the year, but it's especially pertinent for the next two weeks, as police in both townships up their enforcement of seat belt laws during the statewide Click It or Ticket campaigns.

Want a refresher on the finer points of New Jersey seatbelt laws? 

• Everyone in car must wear a seatbelt. That goes for people in the front and back seats, too. 
• It's the responsibility of the driver to make sure every passenger from 8 to 18 is buckled up.
• Police may also issue summonses to unbuckled passengers in the backseat of a vehicle that is stopped for another violation.
• The law applies to any vehicle equipped with seatbelts: vans, SUVs and passenger vehicles.

According to a statement from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, the front seatbelt usage rate in New Jersey declined for the first time in 15 years, to 88 percent. The statewide Click It or Ticket campaigns are aimed at moving that number to more than 90 percent this year.

During the 2012 “Click it or Ticket” campaign, 425 police agencies handed out 29,307 seat belt citations, 4,951 speeding summonses and made 861 drunk driving arrests, the NJDHTS reports.
