DELANCO – The Rancocas Greenway Trail officially opened Thursday.

The pathway starts at Amico Island Park in Delran, meanders east towards Riverside, crosses the Delanco-Riverside bridge, goes under the River Line light rail bridge, continues through Delanco and ends at Pennington Park, according to David Levinsky, a Burlington County spokesperson.

The four-mile segment is part of a envisioned 30-mile path that planners hope will ultimately travel the length of the Rancocas Creek, "from its confluence with the Delaware River to its headwaters near the Burlington-Ocean County border," he said.

The pathway is 100 percent wheelchair accessible and offers a variety of outdoor recreation and exercise options, he also said.

"The trail is a great new addition to what was already one of the best parks systems in the nation, and it keeps getting better," added Burlington County Commissioner Allison Eckel.

The pathway cost less than $5 million to design and build, according to Levinsky.

Grants from the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Program and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Regional Trails Project covered the vast majority of that cost, he said.
