Flu Season Hits Rowan University Early; School Urges Precautions

Rowan is reporting more flu cases than coronavirus cases at this point, 6 ABC reports.

GLASSBORO, NJ — The flu is already hitting Rowan University’s Glassboro campus hard, the university announced this week.

In fact, the university is reporting more flu cases than coronavirus cases, and students have had trouble getting their flu medication prescriptions filled locally, according to 6 ABC. Some students have been hospitalized.

The university is advising students to take precautions to avoid getting sick, and to stay home if they are showing symptoms.

“If you have a fever associated with body aches, chills, sore throat or a dry cough, stay home and seek medical attention,” the university said in a statement this week. “Faculty and staff experiencing flu symptoms should seek care from their primary care doctor or urgent care provider.”

The Rowan Wellness Center is located at Winans Hall on the university’s main campus in Glassboro. Inspira Urgent Care is located at 200 Rowan Boulevard, Suite A.

Students whose roommates get sick should contact the Wellness Center to discuss preventive measures.

The university is offering advice similar to what is recommended concerning the coronavirus. Students should wear masks indoors, wash their hands frequently, clean high-touch surfaces regularly, cough or sneeze into their sleeve, and remain six feet apart from others whenever possible.

Rowan also offers free flu shots on its Glassboro campus every Monday through Thanksgiving. Shots are administered in the Owl’s Nest of the Chamberlain Student Center, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment is needed.

The flu typically lasts three to five days, and officials are advising students to stay home for the duration of their sickness, or until they are free of a fever for 24 hours without using medication.
