Fuel Tank Explosion Injures One, Police Say

A contractor was taken to Cooper University Hospital after residual oil inside an empty fuel tank ignited near the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge.

An unidentified man was injured after an underground fuel tank exploded Friday at the Gulf gas station near the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge in Palmyra.

According to Palmyra Police, a third-party contractor was cleaning out empty fuel tanks on the Gulf lot when the explosion occurred just after 12:30 p.m. 

The explosion—the cause of which is still unknown—ignited residual oil inside the tank, and firefighters from Palmyra and Cinnaminson were called to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

One of the contracted employees was injured in the explosion and taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Police said his injuries were serious, but not life-threatening.

Route 73 was shut down at the jughandle by FC Kerbeck for a little more than an hour while the scene was cleared, according to Palmyra Police.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Environmental Protection and Burlington County Board of Health all responded to the scene and are handling the investigation into the explosion, police said. 

The Gulf station is currently closed.
