The resident died in the fire, officials told Patch.

"The crews arrived with heavy fire conditions and attempted to search the residence to make a rescue," said Cinnaminson Fire Chief Philip Drangula. "Unfortunately, despite their efforts, we did not get the result we wanted."

Drangula withheld the victim's identity on Thursday, citing the active investigation into the fire.

"The resident was trapped, unaccounted for and unfortunately passed away in the fire," Drangula said. "They were located later on during the incident."

Firefighters from Cinnaminson and surrounding communities operated at the scene. Photos posted by the Cinnaminson Fire Department showed a stack of thick smoke billowing from a distance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were several house fires in the region on Wednesday, with crews also responding to separate incidents in Haddonfield and Cherry Hill. Meanwhile, one of the largest wildfires in New Jersey's modern history continues to rage in Ocean County.

An especially dry stretch during New Jersey's current drought has made the state especially vulnerable to fires spreading quickly.
