Truck Knocks Out Power to New Albany School

The tractor-trailer was delivering voting machines to the school when it struck power lines Tuesday morning.

A tractor-trailer carrying voting machines got tangled in electrical lines outside New Albany Elementary School and knocked out power to the entire school Tuesday morning.

Business administrator Tom Egan said the 18-wheeler was pulling into the school around 7:30/8 a.m. to deliver voting machines for the June 4 primary election when it struck a couple wires and pulled them down.

Students hadn't entered the school yet when power went out. They've since been bussed to the middle school, where they'll spend the remainder of the day in the gymnasium, Egan said. The students will be given lunch.

"We have to get in 180 days, so we didn't want to cancel school," he explained.

Egan said facilities director Peter Galosi immediately contacted PSE&G after New Albany lost power to have the poles and lines replaced. The process is expected to take the rest of the day.

The district has canceled afternoon kindergarten at the school. Egan said parents would soon receive—if they haven't already—a message from the district about this morning's power outage.
