Garwood Fire That Displaced Family Sent Firefighter To Hospital

One firefighter and one of the four dogs in the home were treated for smoke inhalation.

GARWOOD, NJ — A house fire that displaced a Garwood family last week also sent a firefighter and one pet to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out on the morning of Nov. 2 around 600 Myrtle Ave. The fire started in the basement of the home and was quickly moving up to the upper floors when fire crews arrived.

Crews on scene were able to keep the fire contained to the main home and no other homes were affected. The fire was placed under control after about 2 and a 1/2 hours.

The homeowner got four dogs out and one dog was rescued and transported to the vet for smoke inhalation. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The New Jersey Red Cross was on scene helping the family of two find a place to stay, as well as equipping them with food and clothes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
