Nearly $500K Awarded To Union County Arts Organization
39 organizations were selected out of 109 applications to receive funding.

RAHWAY, NJ — The Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC) was awarded a $497,500 grant as part of a statewide initiative to boost local economies.
A group of 39 recipients was selected from 109 applicants and given funding through Phase II of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority's Activation, Revitalization, and Transformation (A.R.T.) Program.
The A.R.T. initiative, supported by the federal American Rescue Plan, identifies municipalities that foster arts and cultural hubs within their neighborhoods and counties. The grants are designed to boost foot traffic, activate public areas, and grow long-term economic revitalization.

"UPAC is a pillar of creativity and connection in Union County, and this award reinforces the incredible work they do year-round," added Lourdes M. Leon, Commissioner Chairwoman of Union County.
The nearly $500,000 award will be used to advance more community programs, such as the Sensory Friendly Theater series, which provides inclusive performances for residents of all ages with sensory sensitivities.

The money will also support public events, educational opportunities, and efforts that draw crowds into Rahway's entertainment district, according to the Union County Board of County Commissioners.
"This grant enables us to grow in ways that directly benefit our community, from expanded performances to new educational and engagement opportunities that welcome everyone into our theaters," added Danni Newbury, Executive Director for UCPAC.
Beginning in 1928, the theater formerly known as the "Rahway Theatre" held music, vaudeville, and silent movie showings before moving into the "talkie" era of productions with sound. After changing hands in ownership multiple times, the theatre was officially renamed "The Union County Arts Center" by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1985.
The cultural hub of Rahway is now listed in both state and national registers for historic places.
The Union County Performing Arts Center has both a Main Stage (1601 Irving St.) and Hamilton Stage (360 Hamilton St.) location. More information on the programs available at the UCPAC can be found by visiting the theatre's website.
