Family UNO Card Game Ends With Stabbing At NJ Apartment, Police Say

A baseball bat was also involved in the incident, officials say.

CLARK, NJ — A 37-year-old Newark man was arrested on Monday in connection with a stabbing at an apartment following a fight over an UNO card game, Clark Police said.

Derrell Busby is charged with second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

At around 12:10 a.m. on Dec. 19, 2025, officers responded to the 200 block of Gibson Boulevard for a report of a fight involving a baseball bat.

A fight over the card game "UNO" at a family party moved from inside an apartment out into the parking lot, witnesses told police. The fight ended before police arrived.

As officers were on scene, a 9-1-1 call was placed to Clark Police dispatch from a driver who was taking a stabbing victim to UMDNJ Hospital in Newark. Detective Paul Sosnowski responded to the hospital and talked with the person who was allegedly stabbed and was being treated for non-critical injuries.

Sosnowski’s investigation led him to arrest Busby Monday and he was taken to the Clark Police Department, where he was later processed.

Busby was then taken to the Union County Jail. Newark Police also assisted with the arrest.
