TONIGHT: Summer Mummers at 7 P.M.

The South Philadelphia String Band will perform at the Powell Lane plaza. Bring your own chair.

The South Philadelphia String Band was conceived in the premise that a good band features good people and good musicians having a good time.

That motto certainly fits in with the , the latest installment of which will be held tonight at 7 p.m., featuring the group.

Rooted in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia, the band made its first Mummer's Day Parade appearance in 1947. Today its roster numbers in excess of 125 musicians, and is known for its up-tempo, traditional musical numbers.

According to the band's webpage, it credits its successes to the multi-generational efforts of its membersβ€”fathers and sons, siblings, and a women's auxiliary that crafts its colorful costumes.

The Summer Mummers Concert Series are held at the Powell Lane Plaza, near the LumberYard, and are free to attend. Bring your own chair! The series continues June 27 with the Fralinger String Band.
