Residents from 24 units were able to escape safely outside, CBS News New York said.

"We are living a real nightmare," resident Andres Perez told ABC News New York, "We don't know yet if we can retrieve our stuff. We have our documents and clothes and the babies' clothes and milk and diapers."

The Red Cross is also assisting at least 90 people who are now homeless.
