Cranford Approves New Measures For Electronic Vehicles

Non-moving violations of these regulations are subject to a fine of $100.

CRANFORD, NJ — The Township Committee unanimously approved safety measures for a number of electronic vehicles at its meeting on Tuesday night.

Definitions, regulations, and violations for "play vehicles" were added through Ordinance No. 2025-19. These include all-terrain vehicles (ATV), utility task vehicles (UTV), low-speed vehicles, and golf cart-style modes of transportation.

ATVs and UTVs are defined as motorized off-highway vehicles with four wheels. UTVs also have capabilities to carry heavier loads and potentially accommodate additional riders.

ATVs and UTVs are not street-legal and can't be driven on any throughway, park, or property owned or maintained by the Township. Drivers who violate this may have their vehicles impounded at the discretion of Cranford Police if deemed to be a nuisance or unsafe.

LSVs, or golf-cart style vehicles, are defined as having four wheels and being able to go more than 20 miles per hour, but not higher than 25 miles per hour on a paved surface. These cannot be powered with gas or diesel fuel.

The same restrictions for children present in passenger cars must be followed while traveling in an LSV. Operators must have a valid driver ID to control the vehicle.

Everyone on board one of these "play vehicles" must wear a helmet, regardless of age.

Non-moving violations of these regulations are subject to a fine of $100. Court appearances are not required.
