Union County Historical Society will present Illustrator Frank Thorne on February 7 at 2 p.m. at the Hanson House.
Frank Thorne will be discussing his book, "Illustrated History of Union County" which looks at the rich past of Union County and the Garden State. Mr. Thorne created an illustrated history of Union County when he was a teenager at the Art Career School in NYC. His illustrations trace Union County's history with vivid drawings, maps and captions. This illustrated newspaper series appeared in the "The Elizabeth Daily Journal" over a half century ago.
Frank Thorne was born in Rahway in 1930 and currently resides in Scotch Plains. He began his career in pulp magazines. He later turned to comic books and comic strips, illustrating the likes of "Flash Gordon" and "The Green Hornet." His work appeared regularly in Playboy, High Times, and Heavy Metal magazines. He is probably best known for "Red Sonja," published by Marvel Comics about a fierce and scantily clad female barbarian.
