Fugitive In Deadly North Jersey Hit-And-Run Case Captured, Authorities Say

The crash left one person dead.

ELIZABETH, NJ — A man was arrested in the Dominican Republic in connection to a deadly hit-and-run crash in Elizabeth in 2022.

Trevon Smith, 27 of Newark, was arrested on Dec. 1 and is charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and third-degree hindering prosecution.

At around 2:50 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2022, the Elizabeth Police Department responded near the intersection of Newark Avenue and Durant Avenue for a report of someone being hit by a car.

Adi Taipe-Castillo, 30 of Roselle, died at the scene.

The Union County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force and Elizabeth Police Department were able to identify Smith and learn that he had fled the United States.

He is being held in the Essex County Jail while he waits for a court appearance.
