Overnight Lane Closures Planned For Rt. 22 In Union County This Week

The lane closures are due to a paving project that is nearing completion in Hillside and Newark, according to NJDOT.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey Department of Transportation officials announced overnight lane closures on Rt. 22 this week, as a paving project nears completion in Hillside and Newark.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, until 6 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 21, NJDOT’s contractor, Della Pello Paving, Inc. is scheduled to close the right lane on Route 22 in both directions between the Broad Street overpass in Hillside and the bridge over Empire Street in Newark to install guiderail.

This work will continue Wednesday and Thursday. At least one lane will be kept open in each direction overnight.

The work is part of a $2 million federally-funded project to resurface Route 22 in both directions between Broad Street/CR623 to Route 27/Empire Street.

In addition, guiderail and drainage structures are being upgraded. This project is expected to be complete in the spring 2023.
