Update On Dozens Left Homeless After Deadly Fire In Union County
Two people were killed, leaving behind two children, the City of Plainfield said.

PLAINFIELD, NJ — Dozens of people left homeless after the deadly fire over the weekend were able to return safely to their apartments, the Red Cross said.
Two people were killed, and two firefighters were injured after a fire at an apartment building at 308 West Front St. broke out on Sunday.
Over the course of four days, the Red Cross helped 12 families with shelter and another 11 families who were in need of emergency financial assistance for food, clothing, and their own temporary housing.

On Wednesday evening, the shelter at the Plainfield Performing Arts Center was closed due to a lack of need.
A total of 1,117 meals and snacks were provided to the families, along with 93 overnight stays. Families who were able to return home were also given disaster recovery supplies.

More than 40 volunteers with the Red Cross helped those impacted.
Deadly Fire
Shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday, firefighters responded to an alarm of smoke at 308 West Front St. in the third-floor hallway. After receiving multiple calls, the situation was upgraded to a full structure fire response.
2 Killed In Union County Fire Identified, 2 Firefighters Also Hurt
Firefighters noticed heavy smoke leaving the roof and a fire at the back of the building when they arrived. Evacuations began and a working fire was declared.
The building sustained significant structural collapse damage, including severe roof failure.
Leonel Garcia-Cortez and Maria Guaya both died, the City of Plainfield said. They leave behind two children, ages 17 and 11.
Three others were treated for smoke inhalation, including a baby who received care at the scene. Two firefighters were also hurt in the fire and have been released after treatment.
The Red Cross said they were assisting around 90 people following the fire.
A second building on Madison Avenue lost power and had issues with heat and water services on the property.
The cause of the fire is still under review.
