CRANFORD, NJ — Downtown Cranford has a brand new treat in its list of local businesses.

Carmela's Sweet Shoppe opened last month and is now serving customers at 11 Walnut Ave.

Fruit slices, chocolate truffles, and Carmela's signature sea salt caramels are available now. The store also makes candy apples with its own house recipe.

The store's name is a nod to co-owner Rosie Caramella-Smith's grandmother whose name is Carmela Caramella.

"Family is huge to me," Caramella-Smith told Cranford TV, "and now I get to share this dream of mine with everyone else."

Carmela's also pays nod to traditional Jersey Shore fare with a variety of fudge options on site. History continues as a recurring theme at the shop, as they also have a wall of "retro" candies that are not found as often now in typical grocery stores.

One of Carmela's displays also includes a station to showcase other bakery creations by women-owned small businesses in the area.

The store has hours from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
