Mayor Brad Cohen said Sam is a great example of what is possible in public school education. He recalled that Cohen was on the Board of Education when Sam graduated from high school.
He said Sam was good at athletics, music and academics while at school.
"It is very possible with a good family, a good community and a good education. And I think that’s why a lot of people choose to move here,” Cohen said. “I wish Sam the absolute best in the Olympics ahead of him.”
Mattis graduated from East Brunswick High School in 2012.
He went to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he was the 2015 NCAA national champion in the discus.
