Truck With Car Tires Catches Fire On NJ Turnpike In East Brunswick

No injuries were reported. It is not known how the fire started. ​

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A tractor-trailer caught fire on the NJ Turnpike in East Brunswick on Wednesday afternoon.

The 53-foot trailer was filled with passenger car tires, police said. The incident happened near NJ Turnpike and Cranbury Rd./ Ryders Lane, close to the Colonial Oaks neighborhood.

At least two lanes were closed as firefighters battled the blaze. Residents of Colonial Oaks were asked to keep their windows closed and shut down any mechanical device that draws air from outside.

Police also told residents they may get a strong odor of rubber. The Middlesex County Hazard Materials Unit was conducting continuous air monitoring.

No injuries were reported. It is not known how the fire started.
