Edison Plans To Restore Public Speaking Time To 6 Minutes
A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for Feb. 10.

EDISON, NJ – After receiving much flak for their decision, Edison Council will introduce an ordinance to restore public speaking time to six minutes.
Late last year Council adopted an ordinance that limited public speaking time from six to four minutes, with no time for rebuttal.
Council faced public backlash for this move. Many residents pointed out that people who come to speak in front of the council often need more time to express themselves as English is not their first language.

Limiting public speaking time was an infringement on free speech, residents said.
Earlier this month, Council President Margot Harris vowed to restore the six minutes of public speaking time.

“To me it’s never about the minutes, but the way the minutes are used. The unfortunate result of what’s happened with this change is that I don’t think we are reducing the time of our meeting, I think they have actually increased due to all the hue and cry,” Harris said.
According to the ordinance, “Township Council wishes to repeal recent changes to the public speaking times to restore the six minute speaking limit and allow for rebuttals.”
The ordinance will be introduced during Wednesday’s meeting. A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for Feb. 10.
