METUCHEN, NJ — The Metuchen School District received $2 million in state funds to make improvements to the field at Edgar Middle School.

Last week, Speaker Craig Coughlin, Assemblymen Robert Karabinchak and Sterley Stanley (NJ-18) visited the school to highlight the uses of the funding. Also present were Mayor Jonathan M. Busch and school Superintendent Vincent Caputo.

Coughlin said the new turf field will bring about an opportunity for the community. "All of us who were fortunate enough to have children play recreation sports know that there are so many times things get rained out, it makes it disappointing for the children, and makes it hard for parents to reschedule and adjust their work schedules," Coughlin said. "It's going to help the school and be able to make sure the students get out to do all of those kinds of things that make for a better experience."

Karabinchak said that the new turf field will help students academically as it will clear minds and de-stress everyone.

"The most important fact is we all work together for the constituents and the residents of each town. We're all working together to bring about positive changes. In this case, we'll be able to use this field throughout the year," Stanley said.

Apart from students, the field can also be used by adult teams in the borough and by the Recreation Department.

Mayor Busch said it was incredible to have the representatives visit the borough to have a look at community needs. "It's incredible to have a connection like this with your representatives, where you talk to them about the needs of the community, You bring them here and you're able to show them exactly how our community will benefit," Busch said.

The grant was issued through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and is part of the 2023 NJ state budget.
