Proposed Bergen Hospital Merger Dropped, Documents Show

Hackensack Meridian Health and Englewood Health have dropped plans​​​ for a merger weeks after a federal court blocked the union.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Hackensack Meridian Health and Englewood Health have dropped plans for a merger less than a month after a federal appeals court blocked the proposed union between the two Bergen County hospitals.

The boards of both hospitals voted at the end of March to terminate the merger agreement, according to a motion filed April 5 in federal court.

Hackensack Meridian Health and Englewood Health announced their merger in October of 2019.

Judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit announced their ruling in March, agreeing with a lower court judge. The judges said competition between the two hospitals keeps prices fair for insured patients, and encourages both systems to be innovative.
