Mitchell Simon Co. in Englewood Going Out of Business

Longtime South Dean Street hardware store will shut doors after 68-year run blaming declining business.

A downtown Englewood fixture, Mitchell Simon Co., a hardware and housewares store for more than 68 years, announced Monday, Feb. 18, it will be going out of business, according to a report on NorthJersey.com

Retired owner Philip Simon, reached by phone at his Florida home, said the store, which opened in 1945 and is located at 15 S. Dean St., was closing because of declining business, the influence of the big box stores and the ability to buy items online. He also said blamed Englewood’s changing demographics for the decision to close.

Simon said the stores sales figures weren’t paying the cost of utilities and property taxes, the latter costing $63,000 a year.
