Sugar Hill Records Heirs Avoid Jail in Tax Case

Two brothers given probation for failing to file tax returns, reports say.

Two sons of the founders of Englewood rap label Sugar Hill Records were sentenced Thursday to three years probation for failing to file taxes, the Associated Press reported.

Tenafly resident Joseph Robinson Jr., 51, and Leland Robinson, 47, of Englewood, must also complete 400 hours of community service and be subject to three months of home confinement. Joseph Robinson must also pay $16,000 and Leland Robinson faces an $8,000 fine.

The two brothers apologized to a judge in court and pointed to influence from their mother in making them want to give back, NorthJersey.com reported.

A third brother, 42-year-old Rhondo Robinson, of Englewood, is awaiting sentencing.

The tree pleaded guilty to not filing taxes between 2005 and 2007, the AP reported.

Federal authorities have said the three had incomes ranging from $577,000 to $792,000 when they failed to file taxes, the report said.
