1-Year-Old 'Severely Burned' From Spilled Coffee In Garfield: Police

An infant suffered apparent second-degree burns at a Garfield residence and was airlifted to St. Barnabas Hospital in New York.

GARFIELD, NJ — A 1-year-old infant was severely burned Wednesday morning in Garfield, after he pulled a cup of coffee from the top of the TV stand and spilled it over his chest and shoulder, Police Captain Mario Pozo said in a news release.

Police responded to the Malcom Avenue residence at 8:45 a.m. and found the infant suffering from apparent second-degree burns, Pozo said.

Based on the severity of the burns, the infant and his father were taken to the nearby 20th Century Field, where it was safe to do an airlift, and then taken by helicopter to St. Barnabas Hospital for treatment, police said.
