Local Track and Field Athletes Combine for 17 Golds at NJ Striders Meet

Hundreds of kids from more than 20 area junior track and field teams converged on Fair Lawn Sunday to compete in the NJ Striders Track and Field meet at Sasso Field.

Sixteen junior track and field athletes ages 7 to 15 from Fair Lawn All-Sports and Saddle Brook won events that ranged from shot put and discuss to the 400-meter dash.

Jo Sacchinelli, director of the Fair Lawn All-Sports Junior Track & Field team and the organizer of the event, said many of the athletes who competed Sunday will return to the track in two weeks for a Junior Olympics preliminary in Rutherford. Athletes who perform well at the Rutherford qualifier could move on to States, Regionals and eventually Junior Olympic Nationals.

Last year, All-Sports sent 16 of its approximately 155 track and field athletes to Nationals and took home eight medals. Sacchinelli said she expects another strong showing this year. 

Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook athletes had particularly strong showings in the shot put (four firsts), long jump (four firsts), high jump (three firsts), discus (two firsts) and 1,500-meter race walk (two firsts) on Sunday. 

Fair Lawn All-Sports athletes also took first in 13-14 year-old girls turbo javelin and the boys 8 & under 400-meter dash.

Fair Lawn's Connor Newman was the only athlete from either town who earned first place honors in two events. Newman won both the shot put and the discus throw in the Boys 13-14 age division.
