Coyote Euthanized
Late Friday afternoon, police sent a message to residents saying the coyote had been euthanized.
"During the investigation, two coyotes were located, one already deceased and one that was acting abnormally and was euthanized," the police said. "Both will be sent for disease testing. It is unknown if any public threat continues in the area, but we will maintain a presence in the immediate area and continue observation for any sick or aggressive animals."
The fatal disease rabies is rarely found in coyotes, expert say, but it is possible. Humans bitten or scratched by an animal with rabies must get a series of shots or the disease is likely to prove fatal.
Police said that state officials are still investigating as well.
They advised residents, "Continue to use caution while walking in the area of Chestnut Ridge Road and immediately report any sightings of sick or aggressive animals to our department. Pay special attention while outside with pets and children and do not leave them unattended."
Coyote Precautions
Officials in Saddle River have complained about aggressive coyotes over the years. One coyote was killed during a deer cull last year.
The state says, "Although extremely rare, coyotes have been known to attack humans. Parents should monitor their children, even in familiar surroundings, such as backyards."
Police said that any resident that has had a similar incident should call the Saddle River Police to document the event. Call the Saddle River Police at 201-327-5300.
The state Department of Environmental Protection said that anyone who sees a coyote in the daytime that show no fear of humans should contact police and the Division of Fish and Wildlife at 908-735-8793; outside of normal business hours call the DEP Hotline at 877-WARN-DEP.
