Saddle River police responded, they said in an alert around 10:30 a.m. They asked the state's Department of Environmental Protection Division of Fish and Wildlife and Tyco Animal Control to respond as well.

"Use caution while walking in the area of Chestnut Ridge Road," police advised. "Pay special attention to small pets and children and never leave them unattended outside."

The road runs through the town, parallel to the Garden State Parkway.

What To Do

Officials in Saddle River have complained about aggressive coyotes over the years. One coyote was killed during a controversial deer cull last year.

The state says, "Although extremely rare, coyotes have been known to attack humans. Parents should monitor their children, even in familiar surroundings, such as backyards."

Police said that any resident that has had a similar incident should call the Saddle River Police to document the event, 201-327-5300.

The state Department of Environmental Protection said that anyone who sees a coyote in the daytime that show no fear of humans should contact police and the Division of Fish and Wildlife at 908-735-8793. Outside of normal business hours call the DEP Hotline at 877-WARN-DEP.
