Memorial Day Parade, 'Meet the Marching Band,' Unico Car Show in Week Ahead

A look at what's on tap this week in Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook.

  • Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day)
  1. Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook municipal offices are closed for Memorial Day
  2. Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook schools are closed for Memorial Day
  3. Saddle Brook Boy Scout Troop 221 is holding a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to raise money for scout camp. The sale, located at 149 Nedellec Dr., will include clothing, toys, computer equipment, housewares, as well as baked goods and BBQ food.
  4. The Fair Lawn Memorial Day Parade begins at 10:30 a.m., proceeding from Pollitt Drive to Fair Lawn Avenue to River Road to Berdan Avenue and down the Avenue of the Heroes into Memorial Park. Veteran ceremonies will follow at the circle at the Avenue of Heroes after the conclusion of the parade. 
  5. Overnight parking enforcement is suspended in Fair Lawn.
  • Tuesday, May 28

    • Wednesday, May 29
    1. Gilman Choudhury, parent liaison for the Paterson Public School District, will speak about the essence of Islam and current issues dealing with Islamic relations with the rest of the world at the Fair Lawn public library at 7:30 p.m.

    • Thursday, May 30
    1. A blood screening will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Fair Lawn Senior Center. Appointments can be scheduled by coming to the Fair Lawn Health Department, Borough Hall Room 112. The fee for the Blood Screening is $20. Call (201)-794-5331 for more details on what to bring.
    2. Fair Lawn Friends of Music are holding a "Meet the Marching Band" night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Fair Lawn High School band room. The evening gives Fair Lawn students entering grades 7-12 a chance to learn about the FLHS Marching Band and Color Guard from participating students and instructors. Dinner will be served. 
    3. Joan Cusack Handler, author of several books of poetry, will a story of growing up in the Bronx in the 1950s, at the Fair Lawn public library at 7 p.m.
    4. The Saddle Brook Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall, located at 93 Market Street. Click here for a meeting agenda.

    1. The New Vision Players will hold auditions for a performance of Les Miserables at the Fair Lawn Community Center. Auditions for children ages 7 to 11 will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Auditions for ages 17 and older will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    2. The Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series presents Red Molly with the Copper Ponies at 8 p.m at the Fair Lawn Community Center. Tickets for the show are $25.
    • Sunday, June 2
    1. The Fair Lawn Recycling Division in cooperation with the Bergen County Utilities Authority will hold a paper shredding event for Fair Lawn residents only at 9 a.m. at the Recycling Center. Each vehicle is limited to four boxes of material and the event will end when the truck is full. For more information, call (201)-794-5304 or e-mail recycling@fairlawn.org.
    2. The Saddle Brook chapter of Unico is holding a Car Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at the Washington School parking lot, located at 225 Market St. The event will include cars, food, music and raffles.
