NJ Policewoman Hospitalized After Driver Smashes Patrol Car Running Red Light, Authorities Say

A driver ran a red light and smashed into a police car near Route 17 in Bergen County, sending both drivers to the hospital, police said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A Hasbrouck Heights policewoman was taken to the hospital Tuesday after a driver ran a red light and crashed into her patrol car, officials said.

First responders arrived at the crash at the intersection of Franklin and Terrace avenues — two blocks from Route 17 — just after 5 a.m., authorities said.

Both drivers were alert and conscious. and were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The officer's dash camera showed that she went through a green light and the other car failed to stop at a red light and plowed into her, police said.

Lt. John Behr said Wednesday that the department expects to issue summonses to the other driver — identified as a 64-year-old man from Hackensack — at the conclusion of the investigation.

The officer was treated and released from the hospital the same day, he said.

"We are thankful that our officer is home recovering. Based on the vehicles damage, the outcome could have been much worse,” Police Chief Jeffrey Werner said.
