What Is Sound Healing?

Sound healing, also known as sound therapy, utilizes instruments such as Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, and tuning forks.

These tools emit specific frequencies that resonate with the body, helping to release stress, clear energy blockages, and promote deep relaxation.

In group sessions, such as sound baths, participants lie or sit comfortably while waves of sound envelop them, creating a meditative experience.

Practitioner Joseph Cuozzo leads the Monday evening sessions at Tranquility Yoga, using Himalayan sound bowls and other instruments to guide participants through a journey of relaxation and restoration.

Cuozzo trained under internationally acclaimed Master Sound Healer & Teacher Satya Brat, founder of “IASH” the International Academy of Sound Healing in Kolkata India.

"Joseph brings several sound disciplines to his practice ranging from group relaxation to one-on-one targeted sessions depending on the needs of those partaking," said Lisa McCormick, the proprietor at Tranquility Yoga. "His most popular class is sound relaxation with Himalayan Sound Bowls, and we are thrilled that he is joining our team, so members can enjoy sessions with him every Monday evening."

The goal is to harmonize the body's natural frequencies, which are often disrupted by modern stressors, thereby fostering healing and rejuvenation.

Benefits of Sound Therapy

Studies and traditional practices have highlighted several benefits of sound therapy, including:

  • Reduced stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Improved sleep patterns
  • Relief from joint pain and headaches
  • Enhanced focus and energy
  • Lower blood pressure

What to Expect

Each session begins with a brief discussion of participants' intentions or areas of focus. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and find a resting position that suits them, whether lying on a mat or sitting on a chair. The session involves soothing sounds from bowls, gongs, and other instruments, and may include gentle "on-body" work depending on individual needs.

A History of Healing Through Sound

Sound as a healing tool has roots in ancient civilizations, where vibrations were used to transform the human body and spirit. Modern science supports the idea that all matter, including the human body, has a frequency. Sound therapy seeks to restore balance by using pure, clear vibrations to counteract disruptions and promote a state of ease.

How to Participate

Sessions are open to all and suitable for both newcomers and experienced participants.

Each session lasts 60 minutes, intended to be an enjoyable, restorative experience," said McCormick. "Bathe in the healing sounds of Himalayan Sound Bowls with Joseph Cuozzo to help remove stress and clear energy blockages. You'll leave feeling restored and ready for your week ahead."
