About Town: Saturday Night Review & Summer Sneak Peek

Saturday Night at Khloe's and a sneek peak at Summer in Fort Lee.

Before we talk about summer, let’s dish about Khloe’s, Fort Lee’s newest fine fun French eatery that moved into the old Jerry’s Pizzeria space. Had we answered our phone on Saturday night, rather than repeatedly hit the “ignore” button so that we could finally finish watching “The Hurt Locker,” a DVD now so grossly overdue from the Fort Lee Public Library, we’d be writing about Khloe’s in the first person rather than in the third. But alas, such is the life of a roving reporter—we’re never where we should be.

Our friends informed us that on Saturday night Khloe’s was hopping with good people, good music and the soothing sound of mixing as Felix and Nina prepared many, many, (did we say many?) rounds of their signature alcohol-less mojito cocktails that the guests then added their rum to, thereby putting the “oh” in mojit-o. Felix had the incredible sound system spinning some fantastic jazz. So fantastic, in fact, that people were encouraged to get up onto the floor and dance like it was still prohibition, begging the question: was it the music or the mojitos that got the party started? Looks like Khloe’s just might be the new Saturday hot spot. Don’t forget to B.Y.O.Booze.

Since this weekend kicks off the unofficial start to the summer, we thought we’d give you a sneak peek and let you in on some fun things to look forward to. Everyone’s favorite Fort Lee’s Music and Movies Under the Stars returns for another fabulous season beginning Saturday, July 2nd and will run every Saturday evening through September 3rd. In addition to showing classic movies, we hear that they will be showing some recent releases such as The Social Network, True Grit, and The King’s Speech. The family movie is going to be Fantastic Mr. Fox. Each “Saturday Night at the Movies” begins at 7 p.m. with live musical entertainment and dancing followed by a film at sundown.

Music & Movies Under the Stars takes place on the great lawn outside of the Fort Lee Community Center where the retractable wall lifts to reveal an open-air stage. During the summer this is the place to meet your neighbors, lay a blanket on the grass, have a picnic, listen to some great live bands, and watch a movie—all for free! What other town provides this kind of free entertainment to their residents every weekend during the summer?

Also returning this summer is the Fort Lee Farmer’s Market. The kickoff to the Farmers’ Market is during the Fort Lee Arts & Music Festival on Sunday, June 5th. After that, the Farmers’ Market will return towards the end of June to the Fort Lee Community Center where it will be held weekly, every Sunday, through late fall.

Anyone who’s ever tried to organize a Farmers’ Market knows how difficult it is to get farms to commit to come to the same place every week for two entire growing seasons. Farmers want to be sure that enough local people will come out to support them and buy their product in order to make it worth their while to pack their produce and travel here every week. That’s why it often takes years to build a large Farmers’ Market. The one way to ensure that more vendors will come is to come out and support the vendors who commit themselves to our town every week. If you support the farmers, more farmers will come.

The Fort Lee Community Center is located at 1355 Inwood Terrace.
