Fort Lee Police Remember Murdered Officer William Birch
Birch was shot and killed on Sept. 4, 1966 while responding to a holdup at a hotel on Route 4.
FORT LEE, NJ β The police department honored the late Officer William T. Birch Wednesday, the 53rd anniversary of his death.
The department posted a message about Birch on its Facebook page.
"Never forget the sacrifice that he made," the message read.

Birch was shot and killed on Sept. 4, 1966 while responding to a holdup at a hotel on Route 4.
As he arrived at the hotel, one of two suspects exited the lobby and shot him three times, killing him. The suspect then abducted a couple at gunpoint and forced them to drive away. The suspect was arrested a short time later after a shootout with officers.

Officer Birch had been with the Fort Lee Police Department for slightly more than two years and was survived by his wife and three daughters.
