POLL: Has the School Board Done Enough to Promote the Referendum?

Voting day is just five days away (Jan. 24); Polls will be open from 2 to 9 p.m.

Next week Fort Lee voters will go to the polls to determine the fate of the ’s $30.2 million referendum to upgrade and expand the school system.

Leading up to the referendum, which takes place Tuesday, Jan. 24, the school board has held three community forum meetings—one on Dec. 12, one on Jan. 3 and another on Jan. 17—in attempt to sway undecided voters, explain various aspects of the referendum in detail and answer any questions people might have.

The BOE has also led a series of public walking tours of the schools, providing a firsthand look at the overcrowding and infrastructure woes the district faces.

And the board even launched a special website dedicated to all things referendum 2012, which details everything from the repairs, renovations, replacements and upgrades the $30.2 million—about $9.7 million of which would come in the form of a state grant the district will lose if the referendum fails—would pay for, school-by-school, to the impact on local taxpayers.

This week, school officials sent out a mailer to all households in Fort Lee, which also outlines when and where people can vote, what the referendum is all about, how much it will cost, the $9.7 million state grant, the scope of the work, the tax impact and sections called “economic uncertainty” and “why now.”
