Can Unaffiliated Voters Participate In The Primary?

If you’re registered to vote and would like to affiliate with a political party, you can download and complete the NJ Party Affiliation Form.

The NJ Primary Election is a semi-closed election, per state law. Voters who are already affiliated with the Republican or Democratic Party can vote only in that party’s primary election, according to the Monmouth County Clerk’s Election Division.

Unaffiliated voters can participate in the partisan primary of their choice, but only by declaring with either party.

Unaffiliated voters who vote in the primary will automatically have their voter registration status changed from unaffiliated to either Republican or Democrat (whichever ballot has been chosen).

At a later time, voters can change their registration status back to unaffiliated or to another political party, officials said. Unaffiliated voters can vote at their polling locations by indicating which political party's primary election they would like to vote in.

Unaffiliated voters who vote by mail will not initially receive a mail-in ballot, officials said. Instead, they will receive a political party affiliation form accompanied by information on how to declare with a political party.
