Woman Lured From Car, Wallet Taken In Distraction Theft: Freehold Twp.

A woman who went to her car after shopping in Freehold Twp. had her wallet stolen when another woman gave a phony reason to leave the car.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, NJ — Freehold Township Police are warning residents after a woman was lured from her car and had her wallet stolen during a "distraction theft" in a grocery store parking lot.

When the woman got into her car after buying her groceries, an unidentified woman, acting as a concerned citizen, approached her and told her there was a substance on the back of her car, police said in the report.

The "concerned citizen" offered to help the woman clean it. When the victim got out of her car and was distracted by the female, an unidentified man removed her wallet from her purse.

Police did not indicate which store the incident took place at, which garnered a critique from some Facebook users who felt that would be helpful information.

Other responders on Facebook said they are always wary when approached by a stranger for directions, or other reasons. There was no description given of the offenders, other than their gender.

Regardless of which store you may go to, the department reminds everyone to be aware of their surroundings and keep their personal belongings close by.

If anyone observes anything suspicious, call the department at 732-462-7500 or dial 911 if you witness a crime in progress, police asked.
