Are you dealing with the daily pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis? A new treatment option at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center offers hope. Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) is a quick, noninvasive procedure that can ease osteoarthritis pain without surgery or injections. Affecting around 33 million adults in the U.S., osteoarthritis can make simple tasks difficult and could affect your daily life or even your work. While many turn to pain relievers, physical therapy, or eventually surgery, LDRT presents an alternative way for treating pain.

LDRT treatment uses a very small, targeted dose of radiation, much lower than that used for cancer, to calm inflammation in the affected joint. According to Timothy Chen, M.D., a radiation oncologist and medical director of the Central Nervous System Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and Adnan Danish, M.D., Chief, Division of radiation oncology at St Joseph's Health and the Totowa Cancer Center, this reduction in inflammation leads to less pain, better movement, and the ability to return to enjoyable activities. It is primarily intended for adults with a confirmed osteoarthritis diagnosis who haven't found relief with standard treatments and wish to delay or avoid surgery.

Many patients have felt significant improvement within a few weeks, and the relief can last for more than a year. LDRT is a safe option with minimal side effects and does not prevent a person from pursuing other treatments, like surgery, in the future.
