Noxious Plumes Of Heavy Smoke From NJ Scrap Yard Fire Triggers Air Quality Concerns

The fire broke out on Thursday evening and led to "excessive smoke," road closures and an odor in the area, borough officials said.

FREEHOLD BOROUGH, NJ — Firefighters, police and emergency medical services came together on Thursday after a fire broke out at a local scrap metal yard in Freehold Borough.

Around 4 p.m. on Thursday, the Freehold Borough Police Department said that Throckmorton Street was closed between Rhea Street and Route 9 due to fire department activity.

According to Freehold Fire Department Station 15, the department and mutual aid companies were responding to a fire that broke out at Beacon Scrap Metal.

The fire led to “excessive smoke,” road closures and an odor in the area, borough officials said.

Once EMS units responded to the fire, Freehold Emergency Medical Services said additional Freehold EMS personnel and ambulances were requested to the scene.

In an online post, borough police said that the fire led to poor air quality in the area and advised residents to keep doors and windows closed and to limit outdoor activities.

According to AirNow, the air quality in Freehold Borough is “good” as of Friday morning.
