FREEHOLD, NJ — News of Freehold Raceway ending operations came as a surprise to many on Sept. 19.

In a statement posted on Sept. 19, Freehold Raceway General Manager Howard Bruno said that while deciding to close the track was difficult, the Raceway cannot continue under current conditions.

“This was an extremely difficult decision, especially given the historical importance of Freehold Raceway to the local community and the New Jersey horse racing industry,” Bruno said. “Unfortunately, the operations of the racetrack cannot continue under existing conditions, and we do not see a plausible way forward.”
While the future of the track is unknown as the Borough Council considers redevelopment, Patch wants to reflect on the Raceway’s many years in Monmouth County.
