The program combines "highly visible and proactive law enforcement," targeting a specific traffic safety issue - in this case speeding, police said.

"Unsafe speed remains one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes in New Jersey," said Lt. Joseph Winowski of Freehold Township.

He said that, through a grant the township and several other municipalities received, the department can "mobilize additional personnel to our busiest areas, with a focus on driver safety."

Police use standard law enforcement methods combined with more visibility such as signage to educate the driving public. The goal is for drivers to become more aware - and voluntarily follow speeding laws.

Motorists will see the program in effect on Route 33, Route 9, Route 537, Route 524, Route 527 and Route 79 through the month.
