FREEHOLD, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Emma who nominated her son Jack, 4th Grade of Freehold.

Jack excels in many areas - soccer and math for example. But his maturity and kindness are remarkable. In honor of his late big sister, he has become involved in pediatric cancer support groups, holding toy drives and volunteering, his mom explains.

How do you know the star local student?

I’m his proud mother.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Jack lost his big sister three years ago to cancer. They were two years apart and best friends. Jack continues to keep his sister's memory alive by organizing toy drives, volunteering at events for his family's foundation that helps families dealing with pediatric cancer. He’s also a star soccer player, and excels in math in school. In school, his teachers say he is kind, helpful, and funny.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Though he has suffered a heartbreaking loss, he doesn’t give up. He tries to #bethegood in everything he does.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Jack, 4th Grade!
